For three months Mr. Tinkerton tracked the next chronobox they would attempt to collect somewhere in time. As he explained it to Jovan, they had to wait until one of the absconding travelers stopped moving. They had learned that even with the master chronobox, it could easily take them a day or more to track down the device once they had entered the proper time period. It was futile, and dangerous to repetitively move throughout time when their prey was also on the move.
The time they waited was put to good use. With great care they each wrote down their observations of the previous trip. The colors, the smells, the sounds of everything were documented. Jovan, followed by Mr. Tinkerton gave an oral presentation of their findings in the privacy of the main library and each fielded questions from the other as they strove to document everything. Mr. Tinkertonâs goal was to use the information they learned on each mission for the good of mankind. They had to find a way to do this without placing the future at risk.
Next was the issue of the lizard men. For the first few weeks the creatures were vicious and it took great effort to feed, water, and clean their large steel cages without being injured. However, over time they began to become more docile. Mr. Tinkerton first brought plants in to surround their cages. Then he began a regimen of playing soft classical music for them. The creatures responded positively to the music and seemed to comprehend the inventor and his ward meant them no harm. After the creatures showed no fear or animosity to the two, the tiger Belgano was allowed to enter their cage. The lizard creatures seemed to bond with the large cat and after a few weeks it was noticed the creatures were communicating telepathically with the tiger. Though a process of touch and telepathy the lizard men conveyed their thoughts. Belgano would lick the lizard men with approval and at times he would growl at the creatures but not as a warning of attack, but as a sign of disapproval of some thought or request they had placed in the animalâs mind. It also appeared when the lizard men and the tiger where in physical contact the big cat could convey his thoughts as well. Mr. Tinkerton and Jovan took copious notes as the tiger would lock eyes with one of the creatures and they would converse about unknown things.
Two months into their stay at the laboratory, one of the lizard men communicated with Jovan. Upon regular observation the distinctions between the two creatures became obvious. Mr. Tinkerton had given them names. There was Victor, whose skin was slightly grayer than his counterpart, Abraham. Victor was also younger in age though how much was unknown. He was slightly more curious and was the first to touch Jovanâs hand as the boy was changing out his water.
